Project Update 01/17/2018

City crews will be installing temporary “traffic calming” measures over the next week including:

• Two temporary chicanes – alternating curb bump-outs to narrow the driving lanes – on SE 4th Ave between SE 8th St and SE 9th St;
• Two temporary speed cushions on SE 3rd Ave between SE 6th St and SE 7th St; and,
• A temporary traffic island at SE 4th St and SE 4th Ave.

These temporary measures will be left in place for the period of a few weeks after which a post-installation study will be completed to determine the benefits (or lack thereof) of the measures. The post-study results, including resident input, will provide the City with more background on what permanent traffic calming measures to consider as part of the full project design.

The temporary locations were selected based upon resident input received at the neighborhood kick-off meeting along with areas exhibiting higher local traffic volumes and speeds. The recommended temporary measures were selected to give the City and area residents a variety of measures to consider. At the kick-off meeting both the chicanes and traffic island – which each can be landscaped as green space – received high marks from those in attendance.
